My macro photography journey: Why I’m starting

Water droplet macro photography

Who am I? My name is Johan Ulkulahti and for me home is the northern part of Sweden.

For som time now, I’ve been drawn to nature. Nature and adventure is something that has been missing in my life for far too long. With that, I don’t mean just the obvious landscapes or dramatic views. I find the tiny, overlooked details the most fascinating. The textures on a leaf, the eyes of a small insect, the fragile world we usually walk past without noticing. How we are able to capture moments and turn them into beautiful images with a camera has fascinated me for quite some time now.

Macro photography feels like the perfect place to begin my journey. It forces me to slow down, to look closer, and to appreciate the beauty that exists just a few centimeters from my eyes. To get real close to something and see details that our eyes can’t, feels like opening a new world.

Why macro photography?

The complexity of macro photography is what intrigues me the most. There is a lot to learn, from number of images to stack for the image that I have in my mind to composition and a lot more. Macrophotography also forces us to slow down and breathe, it gives us the opportunity to discover all the tiny miracles that exist in our world.

A new beginning

I’m still early in my photography journey. I’m learning, experimenting, making mistakes and I love it. Macro photography has no shortcuts. It challenges me to improve my focus, composition, use of light, and patience. Every photo is a small victory in seeing the world differently.

This blog is where I’ll document that process.

What You Can Expect Here

This website will follow my growth as a photographer. You can expect:

  • Macro adventures outdoors

  • Behind-the-scenes thoughts and mistakes

  • Gear I use (and learn to use properly!)

  • Tips I pick up along the way

  • My favorite images — and how they were made

Later, I want to explore landscapes, travel photography, and the bigger picture… but macro is the perfect place to start.

Why I’m Sharing This Journey

Photography is more fun when it’s shared. By posting my progress — not just the perfect photos — I hope to inspire others who are also learning. You don’t need the most expensive gear or years of experience to enjoy photography. You just need curiosity.
